Is It Recyclable? – Mail and Magazines

Today, many things are recyclable, but not everything. Let’s focus on mail and magazines.

It seems we all get a lot of mail these days. According to the United States Postal Service, each day they process and deliver more than 421 million pieces of mail.

When you’re done going through your mail and have removed any personal information, put it into the yellow recycling bin. When mail and magazines from your yellow recycling bin arrive at the SWA’s recycling facility, they’re sorted from other paper (fiber) materials and sold to mills and manufacturers to make new paper (fiber) products.

In 2023, more than 30,800 tons of mixed paper was recycled.

If you happen to get more mail and paper (fiber) than fits into your yellow recycling bin, you have options. You can take it to one of more than 250 yellow community cardboard dumpsters stationed throughout our county. Find you nearest yellow community cardboard dumpster.

Or you can take it to one of seven Home Chemical & Recycling Centers (HCRCs). Here are the SWA’s seven HCRC locations from north county to south county:

About the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County

The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA or Authority) is a Dependent Special District that was created by the Florida Legislature in 1975. Since then, the SWA has developed an award-winning integrated solid waste management system to handle the county’s waste and recyclables. We call ourselves AWAY: whether you throw it, recycle it or flush it AWAY, we put your waste to work. Each year, we:

  • Process 100,000 tons of recyclables
  • Combust approximately 1.8 million tons of trash to generate electricity at renewable energy facilities
  • Produce enough electricity to power approximately 90,000 homes
  • Recycle more than 130,000 tons of wastewater treatment residuals (sludge from flushes) into an environmentally-friendly fertilizer amendment
  • Safely recycle or dispose of almost 4.9 million pounds of home hazards
  • Collect rainwater from the roofs of Renewable Energy Facility 2 and store it in a 2-million gallon cistern, which is used as part of the energy making process
