SWA’s August Household Hazardous Waste Tip

Get in gear with good practices that protect our environment and keep our communities clean.
Whether from cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, recreational vehicles or lawn mowers, DIY mechanics should not mix these items nor thrown them away in the garbage:
- antifreeze
- filters
- fuels
- motor oils
Palm Beach County do-it-yourselfers should bring these items to one of seven Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County Home Chemical and Recycling Centers or to any number of local service stations and auto parts stores that accept these waste fluids, as well as used oil filters.

To prevent fuel, oil or lubricant spills, transport the used motor fluids in containers sold at retail stores or in clean plastic containers with a lid. Clearly label all containers and never mix used oil with any other liquids – including water.
One cup of spilled motor oil can contaminate more than 62,000 gallons of fresh water. So keep sand or kitty litter handy in case a spill occurs.
In the last fiscal year, Palm Beach County residents safely disposed of or recycled almost 4.9M pounds of home chemicals. This included more than:
- 507,000 pounds of motor oils
- 79,500 pounds of fuels
- 40,000 pounds of antifreeze
- 16,500 pounds of filters

REMINDER: Hurricane season started June 1. Hurricane season preparations can help minimize property damage and make our communities safer. Once a storm threatens, it’s too late to trim trees. So, now is the time to complete major vegetation trimming.

About the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County
- Process 100,000 tons of recyclables
- Combust approximately 1.8 million tons of trash to generate electricity at renewable energy facilities
- Produce enough electricity to power approximately 90,000 homes
- Recycle more than 130,000 tons of wastewater treatment residuals (sludge from flushes) into an environmentally-friendly fertilizer amendment
- Safely recycle or dispose of almost 4.9 million pounds of home hazards
- Collect rainwater from the roofs of Renewable Energy Facility 2 and store it in a 2-million gallon cistern, which is used as part of the energy making process
