Westlake Creates Public Art Program

The Council voted unanimously to create an ordinance for the new program.

(WESTLAKE, FL) - The City of Westlake will look a lot more colorful in the near future. At the November 22, 2021, monthly city meeting, the city council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance to the city code to provide “ART IN PUBLIC PLACES”. The program will establish a formal requirement for the funding, acquisition, placement, and maintenance of artwork within the City of Westlake. The public art program intends to promote public art to enhance the economic development of this new community, establish the City’s identity as a place where public art thrives, and promote the beauty and interest of spaces visible to the public in both private and public development projects.

Councilwoman Katrina Long Robinson said “Public art adds enormous value to the cultural, aesthetic and economic vitality of a community. Westlake’s Art in public places ordinance will contribute to our community’s identity, fosters community pride, highlight diversity and inclusion as well as enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. The unanimous passing of this item makes me happy to serve in a city dedicated to inclusivity.”
